I learnt something incredibly powerful recently. Something so simple and so obvious, yet had still eluded me for pretty much my whole adult life…
We have the power to choose our thoughts!
Many people have no doubt heard this before and I’m sure I had too. Years ago. Most likely when I first watched ‘The Secret’ – by Rhonda Byrne. But when I heard it again a few months ago, I really heard it. And when I began to truly appreciate and understand it, it was like I was being surrounded in white light and a great sense of clarity came to my mind.
It was a definite ‘A-ha!’ moment.
This excites me so much! Choosing my thoughts puts me in control. I have the power to accept or reject any idea. I don’t have to buy into the negative thoughts. I don’t have to believe them. “I’m not good enough,” “I look tired and old,” “I am alone,”– reject!
I’m training my mind to replace negative thoughts, with positive ones. So, instead of buying into those BS negative thoughts I choose to think “I am worthy. I am beautiful and I am surrounded by loving family and friends.” Thinking this way definitely raises my vibration! However, it took a few goes to feel comfortable with it – especially when I was so much more comfortable with the negative.
This isn’t just a one-time thing though. It’s not like, “Oh, I’ve had a few positive thoughts, so my life is going to be all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows from here on in!” It doesn’t work like that. I’m retraining my mind and that takes effort.
Some practices I am using to help shift my thinking are:
- Say “Next!” to negative thoughts: When a negative thought comes into your mind say “Next!” and move on… and then when another negative thought comes in, say “Next!” and move on again. Picture your thoughts like a train. Each carriage has a new thought, some good some bad. Just keep saying “Next!” until a good one comes along. (When I first started saying “Next!” I had a really transformative experience. The negative thoughts were hounding me like the invasive black dogs that they are. They were getting louder and louder in my head, so I didn’t just say “Next!” I screamed it – in my mind. I bellowed it with a force so powerful that it made those negative thoughts shrink down and disappear into nothing. I felt instantly lighter. Clear headed. Free!)
2. Write down the polar opposite of your negative thoughts: When you’re feeling really crappy write down on a piece of paper exactly how you’re feeling (I write in dot points) Then on another sheet of paper write down the polar opposite of every negative feeling you’ve written down. Next, you burn the sheet of paper with the negative feelings and throughout the day read your positive list – repetition is key!
3. Positive Affirmations: Repeating positive affirmations about yourself and your life can really raise your vibration and fill you with joy. By saying them to yourself throughout the day, especially when a negative thought creeps in, you are creating a new way of thinking – a new habit. You will get to a point where you won’t have to remind yourself to be thinking in a positive way… you just will be.
This is a daily practice and some days are easier than others. But that’s life. We ebb and flow like the tides.
We have the power to choose our thoughts… Truly one of the most life changing realisations I’ve had!
